Dressing with a Purpose
Susan Reimer’s article “What Not to Wear When you are a Woman over 50” expresses that women over fifty need to dress appropriately for their age while being “classy and classic.” To speak directly on this point she makes statements such as “’another year, another body part to camouflage’” and “the enemy of women over 50 isn’t time, it is gravity.” The previous statements have an impact that makes the women reading the article aware of their body image; therefore, they may want to make a change to how they appear in public. Additionally, direct remarks such as “we have to obey a very long list of what not to wear if we don’t want to embarrass the family” and “no attention-seeking” make women feel ashamed of dressing unsuitably. In turn, they will alter the way they dress to fit the “code.” By writing this opinion, Reimer communicates her overall goal of encouraging women over fifty to dress fittingly, and giving them tips on how to do so. Although the article may hurt the feelings of some, the purpose remains necessary for women around the world in any age group. Reimer’s position on the topic poses a valuable lesson for women to gain a sensible style and self-respect.
