The Tone of Tidying Up
The author’s tone throughout the article is casual. She is discussing a topic – tidying – that most people can relate to including herself. Therefore, the author uses phrases like “I don’t know what comes over us” and “dive in and don’t quit” to show her connection to the topic and that she is just like everyone else when it comes cleaning up. Susan Reimer pulls the audience in with a worldwide topic that she is familiar with herself and gives advice like she is speaking with a friend. When giving advice to a friend people are usually casual, so that is the tone Reimer uses when speaking to her readers about cleaning their homes. However, even though her tone is casual, Reimer can portray the passion of the Japanese organizer, Marie Kondo. She uses phrases like “organizer extraordinaire” and “cherish properly.” These phrases express Kondo’s passion for being tidy and helping others become tidy. In turn, Reimer can articulate her casualty and Kondo’s passion with her word choice throughout the article.
